starting 2012 off with a bang!

2012 has been so fabulous so far I think I'm setting myself up for disappointment...

EPIC new years festivities with the fam
(these included... 2 unfinished games of acquire, little boys with the pukes, sparklers, sparkling cider, auld lang syne, and smallville!)

A last minute trip to SEATTLE with Diane to see our dear friends John and Rosemary sealed in the temple!!
(One of my most favorite experiences of my life. Thanks mom and dad for helping me get there for my birthday present!!)

I TURNED 25!!
(and had a quarter life crisis and dyed my hair darker)

Annie, Abby, and Ryan spoiled me with classic Gibbons birthday signs, mom's cake (courtesy of ryan), presents, and KOREAN FOOD! (hopefully picture to come)

I got to skype with mom and dad while they were on the trans-siberian railway in the middle of NOWHERE. yay for technology! (and then we skyped again at midnight so they could see my hair)

Steph and Kelli kidnapped me for a mystery roadtrip!
ST. GEORGE

and VEGAS
(picture to come)

PLUS LOOK AT THIS BEAUTIFUL DATA I'VE BEEN SPOILED WITH THIS WEEK:
(secret confession, there is also horrible looking data that i do not feel like sharing so you think science is all about success instead of the reality...all about failure haha)

yep, life is good. welcome 2012!

ONE YEAR!

well this is slightly overdue, but i had to give a shout out to SEATTLE because i arrived home from my mission one year ago on november 1!!  wow.  i can hardly believe it!! just a little over a year ago, this was me:

i still miss that tag!! i was skyping with my mom tonight, and she got a phone call and said, "Hi this is Sister Gibbons" and even THAT made me mission sick. haha.  I'M sister gibbons! haha.  it really is so fun to read my parents' emails and live vicariously through them.

anyway, i felt really nostalgic on november 1st and it made me think of a list i made throughout my mission of all the things i learned. it's super long but here's a small taste

*how to cook salmon
*how to plan
*that obedience brings freedom, peace, and happiness
*how to check my tire pressure
*i am imperfect, weak, prideful, and selfish, but i am improving through the atonement of Jesus Christ.  He never gives up on me.
*the world is FULL of good people
*the gospel of Jesus Christ can heal ANY heartache
*how to wax a car
*God knows and loves little Sister Gibbons
*how to speak a little cantonese, spanish, korean, samoan, kiribati, japanese, and mongolian
*how to take care of someone else when  you yourself are sick
*how to plant a garden
*it's not always about me.  in fact, it's rarely about me.
*how to work, even when you're exhausted
*i'm only the instrument
*how to make mongolian food
*how to eat with chopsticks
*how to live with someone 24/7 and love them, even with my flaws and their flaws
*i have many beams in my eyes (even ones i'm not aware of)...and i always will in this life! so i have no right to pick at other's motes
*"truth, tis the fairest gem"
*it's easier to weed when the ground is moist
*how to serve a volleyball overhand
*how to throw a spiral and catch a football
*"in the quiet heart is hidden sorrow that the eye can't see"
*that forgetting myself is a decision, one i must make daily
*the only prerequisites to being a good missionary are commitment, desire, humility, and diligence.  age, looks, education, and personality are irrelevant.
*anchovies really are disgusting
*all things are made fair through the atonement
*my stewardship is very overwhelming, but the Lord can do all things through me if i rely on HIM rather than my own abilities
*what the scriptures mean when they say we must lose our lives in order to find them
*patience
*that the gospel is for everyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, culture, background, or personality
*that agency is the key to the plan
*you can't do the Lord's work without charity. it's the purest motivation
*faith has more power than i realize
*how to strike up a conversation with ANYONE
*FPF: follow promptings fearlessly (bro sim)
*the spirit crosses language barriers
*that everyone has an interesting life story. if you take the time to listen and learn it, you will love them
*other cultures are different than mine, but neither is better than the other
*you could see miracles "if only you believed" - elder kikuchi
*we each have a divine gift: our capacity to love is infinite...we never run out of space...we can always love more people more deeply
*i'm not always right (actually i'm rarely right)
*how to truly recognize the spirit
*the spirit can give you very specific guidance when you ask for it, listen, and if you need it
*that the more i learn, the more i feel i know nothing!

wow sorry i just couldn't stop! and there's still so much more. so as i thought of this list and i thought of what i'm learned since i've gotten home, i felt like i've accomplished nothing in the past year!!! talk about missing the mission. then it started to rain!! once it rains i'm lost in my seattle thoughts :)  but then i got out my journal for the past year and started reading about my adventures since i've been home. i realized i have grown and i have learned things. i've decided i need to start writing them down.  here's a start:

*how to drop your parents off at the MTC, instead of the other way around :)
*how to be a grown-up (aka have a lot of BILLS and pay them all)
*i already had a testimony of tithing...but now i REALLY have a testimony of tithing. when we obey the law of tithing, we ALWAYS have enough money (i even ended up with some of those miracle stories. i didn't need them to believe, but wow it fills me with awe)
*i've learned a HECK of a lot about apoptosis, differential equations, fluorescence, molecular biology, developmental biology, and scientific writing
*waking up early really does make you happier (sadly i learned this from NOT doing it all the time like i did on my mission)
*the Lord always brings the people we need into our lives
*winning on the radio is actually possible (especially when you're stephanie buhler) and doing fun stuff for free makes it even more fun
*how patient the Lord is
*when we have the desire to serve and share the gospel of Jesus Christ, we ask for opportunities, and we listen to the Spirit, the Lord will provide us with small miraculous opportunities to be His instrument...no matter HOW busy we are.
*how to use touch screens (i'm getting better haha)
*i learned to be a runner!! who knew little liz could run half marathons?? people if i can do it, anyone can do it

wow i'm actually thinking of a lot of things! but i'll stop so you don't have to be dragged along liz's pensive parade any longer. i feel a lot less depressed now haha!! i also have learned a lot more about my weaknesses, but i guess that is a positive thing because i'm working on them right? so here's to another year of growth!! i think november 1st will always be a day of pondering for me, the rest of my life....a time to think about where i am and where i've been and where i'm going... and of course, the Lord's hand in my life.  it's so prevalent.  it's comforting to look back and see how He's guided me because it strengthens my trust in Him that He will continue to do so.

(sorry that was kind of deep and boring. i'll try to be funny next time haha!)

GOING BACK HOME!

Well my dream was finally realized and I was able to take a roadtrip back to Seattle!  I have now been home from my mission for TEN MONTHS (crazy to me) and I finally made it back. It was amazing how much it felt like home. Part of my heart will always be in Seattle and with the people there :)  I am SO glad my dear friend and former companion Diane was able to come along...it made it much more fun and meaningful.  She survived being with me all day every day for 6 days so our friendship passed the test!! (I know we were together 24/7 on the mission, but I'm sure then the Lord was helping Diane look past my weirdness) It was kind of strange being back in mission boundaries TOGETHER yet not being missionaries.  We had to document a couple things like SWIMMING IN THE LAKE since we never could before! Thank you to everyone who was so kind and let us stay with you or fed us meals or just let us back into your homes! The one hard thing was there were so many MORE people I would have loved to see and spend a lot more time with. I guess that just means I will have to return soon :) Don't think I have forgotten you. You know, you always wonder if people will remember you...because I remember everyone so well...but I know I was just one missionary out of MANY. So thank you for remembering me! LOVE YOU ALL!!

tender mercies

so i was actually really surprised how easy it was to get back to real life after my mission. people would always ask me how i was doing, and i would always say " . . . great!" So i don't know if this is normal, but it seems to be getting HARDER the more time goes by haha. at least so far. the last few weeks i've been missing the mission a lot. maybe it's because my brother and parents are all preparing for theirs. secret confession...rain has the power to make me cry every time :) however! i've found that the times when i'm missing the mission the most, the Lord just drops in these tender mercies. Examples:

*one day, i was randomly missing being a missionary. oh i remember why now! i was walking up the hill to campus, and i saw two cute korean girls speaking in korean. then i started missing sister lee, sister kim, H mart, bul-go-gi, and just seeing koreans everywhere. i was about to get emotional (yeah i know i'm pathetic). then i looked up and saw this guy staring at me, but then he quickly looked away. i played the whole walk-faster-so-you-can-catch-up-to-someone-and-get-a-look-at-their-face game. as i got closer i realized it was a guy that was in one of the wards i served in! he'd just gotten off his mission while i was there and he'd come to a few lessons with us. i said his name, and he was like "it IS you! i didn't think you were home so i was really freaked out!" so we walked and chatted for a minute when we ran into this OTHER guy from the same ward!! so we started reminiscing, and THEN a girl from one of my OTHER areas came walking up. Then a fourth person from maple valley! i didn't actually know him, but still....crazy reunion huh? it made me so happy. the lord is so aware

*then yesterday, i was at the provo temple. the past few days i'd really been missing the mission. i was waiting on the benches and started accidentally eavesdropping on the temple workers' conversation. "is your son getting excited to go to seattle?" i, of course, butted right in. "is he going on a mission there??" "yes! in May." "I just got back from there!!! it's the most amazing mission . . . etc etc etc . . . blah blah blah" so this cute korean woman came over to me and i got to tell her everything that her son should expect. he's going to be speaking korean and english! i told her all about the korean branch and i told her about the korean market and i told her all about President and Sister Larkin and the korean sisters and elders he would meet. it was so fun. i loved it. SAY HELLO TO SEATTLE FOR ME ELDER SONG!!!

*THEN last night, i ran across my friend (and first companion) Diane's blog... expressing the same feelings about the mission. and it just made me happy to read it. so i'm a total copycat but i'm going to post a few pics... just humor my nostalgia :) bring on the mission reunion!!!!

I had to stop with my companions... there are way too many other people i adore that i'd be up way too late. another day, another post :)

my life as a runner . . .

Let's be honest, I haven't always been a runner. In fact, the first time I really ran consistently was with my dear friend Diane. She and I (then Sister Bush and Sister Gibbons) started running together on the mission with the Glacier Park ward cheering us on :)

After running 4 miles with Sister Moulton and Sister Allen on preparation day!

After we got home, we ran our first 5k together on Thanksgiving!

Next stop, HALF MARATHON!!
April 16, 2011

I paid today, so I guess I better really do it now :) I've still got a long way to go, but I started training this week and I'm feeling great! I figure if my pops can run like 50 marathons, I should be able to do a half right? He's my inspiration, and Diane is the perfect person to do it with. LOVE YOU BOTH!

I'm BACK!

hey friends! i'm home :) it's so crazy. leaving beautiful washington was SO hard...but seeing everyone again is SO wonderful. it's very much a bittersweet time. there are no words to describe how much my mission means to me. too much to express right now. but seeing the family again was AMAZING! so here's a pic of that. come to my homecoming! Nov 14th at 1 pm at the chapel on 6313 s. 2300 E. Holladay, UT. I'd love to give you a big hug and hear about all the exciting things in your lives that I missed out on. love y'all!
